A Godly Heritage

October 10, 2007 by Mark

Today I’m wearing Papa’s tie. Heidi’s grandmother gave it to me at her grandfather’s funeral. To me it represents a mantle - the passing down of a Godly heritage. This man wanted to be used of God in every moment of his life. He never let someone cross his path without hearing the gospel.

Heidi, too, received a mantle of sorts from my aunt at my grandmother’s funeral. She received my grandmother’s last Bible, soaked with intercession. My grandmother was the epitome of an intercessor to me. She lived her life, but always had time for prayer. She would often begin her letters to me with, “I was praying for you the other day and the Lord said…” Those are precious memories. In many ways, I live my life as I do because of her legacy.

The other day I was thinking about the legacy that I want to leave my children. I pondered many options: funny guy, successful in life, great husband and father, the “man of God” or the like. I settled on one thing: I want to be the man that uproots and plants nations in prayer, and yet no one knows my name. I don’t want to be the next man of God. I want to be part of a nameless faceless generation that teaches this world what it means to fear God, and to love Him in the midst of suffering.

What legacy do you want to leave?
